His Fire

So I step into the water. Oh thank God the water is cold! After such a hot day with a hot fur coat, this is amazing! I tread further in until a sound off to the right stops me. I halt and gaze that direction. Please let it not be another werewolf. I have had enough experiences with werewolves.

It is only a deer. It has stopped at the water’s edge about fifty feet away and it gazes solemnly at me. Its twelve peaked antlers stand high and the deer’s eyes hold no fear. I merely watch it for a moment in wonder. Why does it not flee at the sight of its predator?

The deer watches me for a minute before slowly turning away. The knot of hunger in me calls for me to run after it and tear into its sweet, succulent flesh. I have never tasted raw venison but the wolven instinct passed onto me tell me that it is delicious. The pain in my gut worsens as my body longs for food. But I must ignore it. That deer looks too strong and those antler look rather nasty. I’d rather stay in one piece for my first meal as a werewolf.

The deer turns and bounds away without warning. The black forest swallows it and the air turns silent yet again. With a deep sigh I turn back toward the welcoming lake. Following the reflection of the sky fire I step deeper into the water. As the water reaches my knees I feel a strange urge rush over me.

I try to contain it. I’m human. I am Steve Daigneault and I am a human being. Human beings just don’t howl. Yeah, that’s what the urge is. I can’t howl! I’d probably stink at it! No! I won’t do it!

But I give in. And what bellows from my throat is shockingly amazing! A deep call from the pit of my stomach rips across the surface of the lake and shoots into the mountains. It is long. It is loud. It is true and mesmerizing. I let it out again and this one is different but equally beautiful.

Soon I am howling relentlessly not caring if anyone else hears it or if it is answered. Right now I just take the time to enjoy this impossible moment. I am human. I am wolf.

I am werewolf.
